Marinas and Boatyards of Annapolis and the Chesapeake: A Working Guide
Nine marinas and yards from Annapolis to Solomons and the Eastern Shore, with verified lift capacities, slip counts, and storage facts, including two yards older than the Civil War.
The Chesapeake is America's largest estuary and arguably its deepest boatyard bench. Sheltered creeks, a long season, and centuries of maritime trade built a working waterfront culture that still runs on travel lifts and varnish brushes. Annapolis calls itself America's sailing capital, but the yards that keep the fleet alive are spread from Baltimore's creeks to Solomons and across to the Eastern Shore. Here are nine from the Waypoint directory. Every fact comes from the business's audited listing or its own website.
Annapolis and the western shore
Bert Jabin Yacht Yard on Back Creek in Annapolis was founded in 1959 and is a small city of boat work: over 200 wet slips, 25 acres of land storage, boatel racks, and more than 25 on-site marine service companies, so nearly any trade can walk to your boat.
Nearby, Annapolis Harbor Boat Yard is a full service maintenance yard with a 35 ton lift handling mechanical, electrical, fiberglass, rigging, and winterization work, accessible by land or water.
South of town on Herring Bay, Herrington Harbour Marinas has been family owned since 1978: twin marina resorts with 600 slips each, four travelifts up to 85 tons, and land storage for 1,500 boats, between Annapolis and Solomons.
On the West River in Galesville, Hartge Yacht Yard has served the yachting community since 1865, with a 50 ton travel lift, an 18 ton rigging crane, a 3,000 square foot spray booth, and fine carpentry that still covers wooden boat repair.
Down at the mouth of the Patuxent, Solomons offers two strong options. Washburn's Boat Yard is a service only yard operating since 1987 with two 75 metric ton travelifts and a 30 ton crane for repowers, paint, and systems work. Spring Cove Marina pairs slips, dry storage, and a fuel dock with a 50 ton travel lift and indoor service bays for boats to 65 feet.
The Eastern Shore
Higgins Yacht Yard & Marina in St. Michaels Harbor is a working boatyard and 50 slip marina on a site that, by the yard's own account, has serviced boats since 1790, with mechanical, carpentry, and storage work on the Miles River.
In Oxford, Campbell's Boatyards runs two yard locations on Town Creek with a 75 ton travel lift, carpentry, mechanical, electrical, rigging, and Awlgrip paint work, plus indoor dry storage and Yamaha engine service.
And in Rock Hall on the Chester River, Haven Harbour Marina Resorts spreads across two campuses with slips, winter storage, yacht services, a fuel dock, a marine store, and an outboard service center.
The Chesapeake rhythm
Bay boating runs on a hard calendar. Haul and winterize in November, splash in April, and book both early, because every yard on this list works a compressed spring rush. If your boat needs paint or a repower, winter on the hard is when it happens, and the good paint sheds are reserved by fall.
The other Chesapeake advantage is density. Between Annapolis, Solomons, and the Eastern Shore towns, nearly every marine trade sits within a short drive or a day sail, so a project that would mean trucking the boat elsewhere can often be handled where it floats. That is one reason cruisers plan refits around a Chesapeake season: the yards compete on craft, not on being the only option.
Plan your season
See every verified listing on the Annapolis area storage and marina page and the Annapolis mechanical and boatyard page. Waypoint checks each business against its own website before listing. For a specific need, a winter paint slot, a rigging inspection, a 60 foot haul out, post it on In Search Of and matching Chesapeake pros get it by email with one tap to take the job.
