A Boater's Guide to Marinas on Long Island
Eight Long Island marinas and yards from Freeport to Montauk, with verified facts on storage, service shops, and slips, including a Sag Harbor yard with roots in 1797.
Long Island is really two coastlines wearing one name. The South Shore runs through barrier beach inlets to ocean fishing, the North Shore hides deepwater harbors in wooded coves, and the East End splits into two forks with Montauk at the tip, staging ground for the offshore fleet. The marinas reflect all of it. Here are eight from the Waypoint directory, west to east. Every fact comes from the business's audited listing or its own website, and Waypoint's coverage now runs from South Padre, Texas all the way to Montauk.
The marinas, west to east
Al Grover's Marine in Freeport has served South Shore boaters since 1950, with indoor high and dry valet storage, winter storage, dockage, and certified Yamaha, Mercury, Volvo, and Yanmar technicians on staff.
In Island Park, Empire Point Boating Center offers both water and land winter storage, transient and long term dockage, certified repair technicians, repowers, and a ship store on Empire Boulevard.
On the North Shore, Coneys Marine in Huntington has been family run since 1974, with fenced winter storage, summer moorings, a full service yard, a chandlery, and a sailboat brokerage selling Catalina and Jeanneau.
Patchogue, on the Great South Bay, has two neighbors worth knowing. South Shore Boat Yard is a family owned full service marina on the Patchogue River since 1992, with winter storage, slips, rack service, and an on site marine mechanic. Patchogue Shores Marina on Cornell Road adds a travel lift, on-land winter storage, in and out service, on site mechanics, and a gas dock, and it is also a Wellcraft dealer.
Heading east, Hampton Watercraft & Marine runs four Long Island waterfront locations from its Hampton Bays base, covering winterization, shrink wrap, indoor and outdoor seasonal storage, and a certified service center that handles everything from engine diagnostics to WaveRunner service.
In Sag Harbor, Sag Harbor Yacht Yard & Marina traces its roots to 1797, when the village was a whaling port. The Bay Street yard offers certified winter storage, transient and seasonal slips, moorings, launch service, and a full service engine shop as a Yanmar and Westerbeke dealer.
And at the end of the island, Star Island Yacht Club & Marina in Montauk is open daily with dockage and diesel at every slip, a full service boat yard, a tackle shop, and a charter fleet on Star Island Road.
The Long Island calendar
Winter defines marina life here. Boats come out in October and November, get winterized and wrapped, and sit until April, so storage capacity and a good service department matter as much as summer dockage. Book winter storage by early fall; the yards with indoor racks and valet programs fill first. In summer the pressure flips to transient slips on the East End, where Sag Harbor and Montauk run full from July 4 through Labor Day.
Geography matters in season too. South Shore boats live and die by the inlets, Jones, Fire Island, Moriches, and Shinnecock, and the bars at Moriches and Shinnecock in particular reward local knowledge, so a marina with mechanics who run the same water is worth real money. North Shore harbors offer deep, protected water and short runs to the Connecticut shore, a different style of boating with the same need for a good yard behind it.
