Scout 670 LXS: Among the World's Largest Outboard-Powered Boats

All stories

Walking the Scout 670 LXS, which Scout calls one of the largest outboard-powered sportfishing yachts built in the world: up to five V-12 Mercurys and 3,000 horsepower.

At some point, an outboard boat stops being a center console and becomes something else entirely. The Scout 670 LXS is well past that point. Scout calls it one of the largest outboard-powered sportfishing yachts built in the world, and standing at the transom looking up at a wall of Mercury V-12s, the claim feels conservative. We filmed the whole boat, engines to staterooms, and the scale is the story.

The wall of power

Scout lists the 670 LXS at 66 feet 9 inches overall with a 16-foot 2-inch beam, carrying four or five Mercury V-12 600-horsepower outboards for up to 3,000 total horsepower. Scout's numbers put top speed around 60 mph with a fast cruise around 40, and with 1,500 gallons of gas aboard, the builder lists range at roughly 500 miles. Those are sportfish-yacht numbers achieved with engines you can see, hear, and eventually swap, which is a large part of the outboard appeal at this size.

The boat under the engines is just as serious. Scout builds the 670 in carbon fiber and E-glass, and the design comes from a partnership with Harrison Eidsgaard, a studio better known for superyachts. The LXS is the luxury sport expression of the platform, blending fishing capability with cruising comfort rather than choosing one.

Yacht spaces, outboard logic

Below deck, Scout fits three staterooms, with interiors offered in three palettes from light to dark. On deck, cockpit beach doors fold out to stretch the usable beam to 19 feet 6 inches by Scout's listing, turning the aft end into a waterside terrace at anchor. The walkthrough covers the helm, the galley and salon, every stateroom, and the fishing cockpit, because a boat like this has to answer two different buyers at once and the video lets you check both answers. Pay attention to the flybridge upper station as well. Scout fits the 670 with a second helm up top, and on a 60 mph outboard boat, that vantage point changes both the fishing and the running experience.

Who steps up to a 670

Owners graduating from 40-and-50-foot center consoles who want yacht accommodations without giving up outboard speed, shallow-enough draft, and familiar maintenance. Bahamas and Keys families who cruise far and fish seriously. And frankly, anyone who wants the dock presence of five V-12s. It is a halo boat, and halo boats are exactly what walkthroughs are for.
