How Much Does a Boat Loan Cost per Month?
Real monthly numbers at today's rates: what $100k, $175k, and $250k boats cost per month at 10, 15, and 20-year terms, and what moves the payment.
Every boat loan payment comes down to three inputs: how much you finance, your rate, and your term. Here is what the math actually looks like at a 6.9 percent APR, the starting rate for well-qualified borrowers through our network.
The quick reference
For every $100,000 financed at 6.9 percent:
- 10-year term: about $1,156 a month
- 15-year term: about $893 a month
- 20-year term: about $769 a month
Scale from there. A $175,000 boat with 20 percent down finances $140,000, which runs about $1,077 a month on a 20-year note. A $250,000 boat with 20 percent down finances $200,000, roughly $1,539 a month over 20 years, or $1,787 over 15.
What the term really costs
Notice the 10-year payment is about 50 percent higher than the 20-year payment for the same loan. In exchange, the 10-year borrower pays far less total interest, since the balance shrinks twice as fast. Neither choice is wrong. Many buyers take the 20-year payment for flexibility, then pay extra in good months, which works because most marine loans carry no prepayment penalty.
What moves your rate
The advertised floor belongs to the strongest files: excellent credit, a healthy down payment, a newer boat, and a conforming loan size. Older vessels, thinner credit, or small loan amounts nudge the rate up, which is exactly why one application to a network of competing lenders beats taking the first quote.
Do not stop at the loan payment
The payment is the anchor, not the whole picture. Insurance, dockage, fuel, and maintenance typically add meaningful monthly cost on top, a common planning figure for maintenance alone is 1 to 3 percent of the boat's value per year. Our Ownership Cost calculator rolls all of it into one honest monthly number.
