How Much Boat Can You Afford?

All stories

Work backward from a comfortable monthly payment to a realistic boat budget, with the debt-to-income math lenders actually use.

The right way to size a boat budget is backward: start from the monthly number your life comfortably supports, then let that number tell you the price range. Here is the same math a marine lender runs.

Start with debt-to-income

Lenders divide your total monthly debt payments, including the new boat payment, by your gross monthly income. Most want that ratio at or below roughly 40 percent.

Worked example. Say the household grosses $12,500 a month. Forty percent is $5,000. Existing obligations, a mortgage and a car payment, total $3,200. That leaves up to $1,800 a month of supported boat payment.

Turn the payment into a price

At 6.9 percent APR on a 20-year term, $1,800 a month supports roughly $234,000 of financing. Add a 20 percent down payment and the math points to a boat budget in the neighborhood of $290,000. Shorten the term to 10 years and the same payment supports closer to $156,000 financed, which is the trade you make for paying the boat off faster.

Budget the boat, not just the loan

The payment is only part of ownership. Plan for insurance, commonly 1 to 1.5 percent of hull value per year, dockage or storage, fuel, and maintenance, where 1 to 3 percent of the boat's value per year is a widely used planning figure. A useful gut check: if the all-in monthly number, payment included, would stress the budget, size down. Nobody enjoys a boat they are anxious about.

Leave a reserve

Marine lenders like to see three to six months of total ownership costs in liquid savings after the down payment, and it is a good rule for you too. The reserve is what keeps a surprise repair from becoming a crisis.

Run your own numbers

Our Affordability calculator at nautical.network/tools does this math live: enter your income, monthly debts, and down payment, or just the payment you want to carry, and it works back to a realistic boat price. When the number looks right, pre-qualify in about two minutes with no credit impact and shop the docks knowing exactly what you can run.
