Boat Services in the Florida Keys: Key Largo to Key West
In the Keys there is one road in, parts arrive by truck, and good techs book out fast. How to keep a boat running from Key Largo to Key West, and who to call along the way.
The Florida Keys are the best boating in America stitched to the thinnest supply line. One hundred and some miles of islands, one road, and water so good that the boat is not a hobby here, it is how you live. The flats, the reef, and the backcountry are all minutes from the dock. The marine parts warehouse is not. Everything a boat needs that is not already on the islands comes down the Overseas Highway on a truck.
What ownership looks like here
Keys boats work harder than mainland boats. Salt, sun and near constant use age gelcoat, canvas and engines fast, and the water never gets cold enough to pause growth on the bottom. Addresses are mile markers, and so are service areas; a tech based in Marathon is a long run from Key Largo, so the fleet is served by a scattered cast of mobile pros, each covering their own stretch of islands.
That is the remote supply reality: fewer techs per mile of coastline than anywhere on the mainland, and parts that take days instead of hours. The Keys reward owners who plan ahead, carry spares, and hold a standing relationship with their mechanic and diver instead of calling cold when something breaks.
The services that matter most
Outboard service tops the list, because almost everything down here runs outboards. In the Upper Keys, Big Beard Boats covers mile marker 106 to 72, Key Largo through Islamorada, with mobile Yamaha and Suzuki repair, scheduled 100 and 300 hour service, diagnostics and emergency dockside calls. In the Middle Keys, Davis Marine Systems is a one technician mobile outboard shop in Marathon that has serviced boats throughout the Keys since 2010. Both are exactly the kind of pro you want on a first name basis before the busy season. The full roster of mobile mechanics working the Keys shows who covers your mile marker.
Sun protection is a close second. Canvas lives a short, brutal life in the Keys, and Conch Canvas in Tavernier has been making and repairing marine canvas since 2001, with free estimates at the boat from Key Largo to Marathon and Ocean Reef.
Dockage and haul out options matter more here than on the mainland because they are scarcer. In Key Largo, Pilot House Marina at mile marker 99.6 offers 50 wet slips, 75 dry racks, Valvtect fuel, pump out, and haul out for boats to 25 feet. Compare the rest of the marinas and storage options in the Keys before the winter fleet arrives and the good spots are gone.
When to book what
Now. October and November are when the snowbird and winter fishing crowds return, and in a market with this few techs, the calendars go first. Get your 100 hour service, bottom cleaning catch up, and canvas repairs booked this month, and order any parts you know you will need rather than betting on the truck.
Hurricane season runs through November 30, and the Keys take it seriously for good reason. Keep your storm plan live into late fall: your haul out spot or hurricane hole, your lines and chafe gear, and a realistic sense of how early you have to move when the forecast turns.
Year round, keep a diver on the bottom on a steady cadence and watch your zincs; the water here never gives you a cold season break. If you cannot find the trade you need at your mile marker, post it to In Search Of on Waypoint, where every listing is checked against the business's own website.
