The Runaround Problem: Why Finding a Good Marine Pro Is the Hardest Part of Owning a Boat
America has 11.6 million registered boats and a documented shortage of the people who service them. Here is what the numbers say about the runaround, and how we are fixing it.
Owning a boat is the best decision most of us ever made. Keeping one running is another story, and the hardest part usually is not the work itself. It is finding the right person to do it.
The math is against you
The US Coast Guard counted 11,674,073 registered recreational vessels in 2024, and Florida leads the nation at more than 1,030,000 boats, which is why the FWC calls this state the Boating Capital of the World. The National Marine Manufacturers Association estimates 85 million Americans go boating every year, and the boom brought roughly 415,000 first-time owners into the market in 2020 alone, with nearly as many again in 2021.
All of those boats need the same small pool of people. The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas found that almost 90 percent of unfilled service-department jobs at dealerships were technician roles, and ABYC has called the technician shortage one of the industry's defining challenges. Even before the pandemic boom, a 2018 industry survey found 90 percent of marine dealers already carried a service backlog, with some stretched past a month.
More boats. Fewer techs. A backlog before you even pick up the phone.
The trust problem on top of the time problem
So you search online, and that is where the second problem starts. BrightLocal's long-running consumer survey shows 98 percent of people read online reviews for local businesses, but trust in those reviews has collapsed, from 79 percent in 2020 to just 42 percent in 2025. Everyone reads reviews. Fewer and fewer believe them.
That leaves boaters where they have always been: asking the dock neighbor, calling six numbers to reach two humans, and hoping the one who answers is good.
What we built instead
Waypoint is our answer: a directory of more than 550 Florida marine pros across 15 services, every listing checked against the business's own website before it goes live, and every Verified badge meaning the owner personally claimed and confirmed their details with our team.
Describe the job in plain words, or the whole weekend, and it comes back as a plan: the right pros under every service, verified businesses first, contacts one tap away. In a pinch before the boat day, post what you need and matching pros get it instantly.
The boats are not getting fewer and the techs are not getting more numerous. The runaround is optional, though. Start at nautical.network/directory.
