Dealers Still Have Too Many New Boats. This Winter, That Is Your Leverage

All stories

Two thirds of dealers tell the Pulse Report their new-boat inventory is too high, and end-of-season discounting is widespread. The winter buyer's case, straight from the trade data.

Every winter somebody asks whether the off-season is really a better time to buy a boat. This winter, the dealer data answers the question directly.

The inventory picture

In its August 2026 Pulse Report coverage, Soundings Trade Only reported that 65 percent of dealers told the Baird Research and Marine Retailers Association of the Americas survey their new-boat inventory was too high, up from 63 percent the month before, while only 12 percent called it too low. In the same Soundings Trade Only coverage, half the dealers surveyed said they were selectively cutting inventory in specific categories, and end-of-season discounting was reported widely.

The backdrop that created it

The lots filled up because retail slowed down. Soundings Trade Only, reporting NMMA's Monthly Recreational Boating Industry Data Summary in March 2025, put new powerboat retail sales at 231,576 units for 2024, down 9.1 percent from the year before. The slide continued: in its July 2026 Pulse Report coverage, Soundings Trade Only cited Baird data showing the industry down about 5 percent year to date through May, and Soundings Trade Only has reported NMMA estimates putting 2025 new powerboat sales short of 220,000 units, down about 10 percent. Fewer buyers plus full lots is the oldest negotiating math there is.

How to use it

A motivated dealer is not a desperate one, and the discounts concentrate on what is actually sitting: leftover model years, slow-moving trim levels, boats that missed their season. So the winter playbook is specific. Know the model year of the hull you are quoted. Ask how long the boat has been on the lot. Get the out-the-door number, not the banner price. And pressure-test the payment before you fall in love, which is what our boat loan calculator and guides are for.

Protect the win

A discounted new boat still deserves a proper sea trial, and a leftover that sat outside for a year deserves a once-over from someone who works for you, not the seller. Waypoint lists marine surveyors and mechanics across 13 states, every listing checked against the business's own website before it goes live.

Dealers spend every winter hoping spring buyers show up early. The data says this is a winter to be one.
