Viking 74 Convertible: World Debut at FLIBS 2024

October 16, 2024

In our previous article, we covered the most anticipated debuts at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Today, we turn our attention to another highly awaited debut, the all-new Viking 74 Convertible, set to make its world premiere at FLIBS 2024.
With enhanced speed, performance, and comfort, the Viking 74 Convertible redefines what a sportfishing yacht in the 70 to 80-foot range can achieve, built on success of the Viking 72, which sold over 75 hulls, and more than 60 years of Viking’s yacht-building expertise.

In this article, we offer a walkthrough of the Viking 74, exploring every feature and improvement that sets it apart from previous models. From the variety of power options to the expanded design elements, we’ll provide a complete overview, including pricing insights for those ready to elevate their sportfishing experience.

Exterior

Viking 74 Convertible

The Viking 74 Convertible carries forward the unmistakable design elements that define a Viking sportfisher. Its sleek, aggressive lines immediately signal its high-performance capabilities, merging sportfishing prowess with the elegance of luxury cruising. Beneath its striking exterior, the hull design has been significantly improved. Utilizing advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Viking has enhanced the hydrodynamics with aggressive strakes and chines, optimizing spray deflection and lift. Combined with an ideal length-to-beam ratio, these enhancements deliver improved speed and fuel efficiency..

The cockpit, now expanded to 216 square feet, provides ample room for both serious sportfishing and leisure. Key features for anglers include two full-length in-deck fish boxes, a transom door with lift gate, and a raised transom fishbox or live well, with customizable sizes available. The mezzanine area offers not only functional storage for tackle and freezer boxes but also a shaded seating area under the flybridge overhang. With optional air conditioning and premium outdoor upholstery, this space ensures guest comfort while maintaining its utility for fishing.

The flybridge has been designed with maximum visibility and ease of operation. An elevated helm platform ensures clear sightlines both forward and aft, ideal for anglers keeping an eye on the action. The helm station is fitted with dual radio boxes, recessed dashboards, and sleek multifunctional displays, providing the captain with easy access to all necessary controls. Completing the helm are three teak ladder-back helm chairs from Release Marine, emphasizing both comfort and style.

In the forward section of the flybridge, guests can relax on a full-length lounge with storage beneath, including a freezer for bait or provisions. Standard features include dual forward freezers, a sink, and a refrigerated drink box, offering the perfect balance of luxury and practicality. Additional seating with storage beneath on both port and starboard sides further enhances the flybridge’s functionality, showcasing Viking’s commitment to blending thoughtful design with top-tier performance.

Interior

Step inside the Viking 74 Convertible, and you’ll find a level of detail and craftsmanship typically reserved for luxury pleasure yachts. The nearly 20-foot beam creates a spacious and airy salon, finished in either satin or gloss walnut. Entering from the mezzanine, guests are greeted by an inviting L-shaped sofa with rod storage beneath, paired with a high-low walnut table and a retractable HDTV for entertainment. The galley is available in two configurations: a U-shaped layout or an open island design, both outfitted with Sub-Zero refrigerators, a Miele four-burner cooktop, and generous countertop space for meal prep or casual gatherings.

Accommodations aboard the Viking 74 include four beautifully designed staterooms, each offering en-suite heads to ensure complete comfort and privacy for guests. The master suite, located amidships, features a king-sized walkaround bed, oak-lined closets, and a forward bulkhead with space for a 65-inch HDTV. In the forepeak stateroom, a queen bed comes standard, though an optional crossover layout with full-size and upper bunks is also available, offering flexibility for different guest needs.

As with the yacht’s exterior, functionality is central to the design of the interior. Ample storage is available throughout, including a dedicated rod and tackle room on the port side, which can also be converted into a fifth stateroom, should additional accommodations be required. This thoughtful design ensures that the Viking 74 seamlessly blends luxury with practicality.

Performance and Specifications

The Viking 74 Convertible comes with a range of power options tailored to varying performance preferences. The standard model features a MAN V12 1550 MHP engine, while the most powerful option, the MTU 16V 2000 M96L, generates 2635 MHP, propelling the yacht to a top speed of 45 knots. Viking’s Advanced Viking Propulsion System (AVPS) enhances the yacht’s fuel efficiency and speed. Utilizing twisted rudders and modified struts, the AVPS reduces hydrodynamic resistance, providing smoother handling and superior performance on the water.

With a total length of 74 feet 8 inches, a beam of 19 feet 9 inches, and a draft of 5 feet 11 inches, the Viking 74 is built for both high-speed sportfishing and luxurious cruising. The fuel capacity starts at 2,030 gallons, with an upgrade option to 2,630 gallons, offering an extended range for longer journeys without the need for frequent refueling.
