Become a Better Boater with How to Boating

September 23, 2024

How to Boating

Owning a boat brings a sense of freedom unlike anything else, but with it comes the responsibility of ensuring safety on the water. Until now, boaters have spent years learning through trial and error, slowly building the skills needed for confident navigation.

Now, How to Boating offers a faster, more effective way to gain that knowledge, helping you become a skilled boater with confidence so you can enjoy life at sea to the fullest.

How to Boating, the recently announced safety division of Nautical Network, was founded by Captain Harley Hunt to meet the growing demand for accessible boating knowledge. Whether you’re a newcomer, average, or a seasoned boater, How to Boating’s hands-on instruction makes the learning process faster and easier.

In this article, we invite you to learn more about the free group instruction events hosted by How to Boating, what they cover, and how you can attend the next session.

Group Instructional Sessions

How to Boating

How to Boating’s first group instructional event, held in July, was a resounding success. The positive feedback reinforced founder Harley Hunt’s belief in the need for these types of sessions. Harley explains the popularity, saying, ‘Everyone enjoys learning from someone with real experience—in this case, that experience comes from a lifetime on the water. Boat owners can now use me as a direct resource instead of relying on the internet or learning as they go.’ This personal connection with boaters inspired the creation of the group events.

The visions of these group sessions perfectly align with How to Boating’s mission to make boating knowledge more accessible, safer, and easier for everyone. For newcomers and seasoned boating enthusiasts, these free sessions are designed to elevate your understanding of boating safety quickly while equipping you with practical, hands-on skills that make life at sea easier. From safely navigating tricky currents to mastering docking techniques in windy conditions, participants gain practical insights that typically take years of experience to learn.

These sessions are structured to be inclusive, ensuring that even if you miss a previous event, you’ll be able to pick up right where the training begins. Each session starts with Captain Harley’s introduction to How to Boating and his approach to teaching. From there, participants dive into lessons that cover key skills—from getting to know your boat and managing wind and currents to docking techniques, reading weather conditions, navigating markers, understanding boating rules, and tying knots.

Conveniently hosted at Marinemax facilities throughout Florida, the events also allow attendees to walk the docks with Captain Harley and explore different boats firsthand, providing a real-world perspective on the topics covered.
